Pricing news isn't getting better for roofing in 2006.
Manufacturers continue to raise prices and no relief is in sight. Expect the following increases:

Residential Shingles: 5-9%
All commercial products and accessories (TPO, PVC, EPDM): 8-15%
All modified and BUR: 5-9%

Most of these increases are effective immediately, some will go into effect in March. If you currently have a bid pending, now is the time to act. Be sure to call your roofing contractor now, so you don't owe more later.

Company Owner Continues Education...

Johnson County, KS requires contractors as of January 1, 2002 to participate in continuing education courses to keep their license within the County current. The purpose is to protect the public by assuring that those undertaking the construction, alteration, repair, or demolition of structures are qualified to perform such services. On December, 6, 2005 John Schuller, owner of JR & Co. received The Builders' Association Continuing Education cerificates for 'Application of Roofing Codes' & 'Erosion and Sediment Control'. Schuller received 8 hours of continuing education hours.
It is important that the roofing contractor you are considering to use is current and up to date with their city, county and state licensing requirements.

Energy Policy Act Gives Building Owners Tax Deduction

The standard is to provide minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design and improvements of buildings, except low-rise residential buildings. The requirements for the building envelope and systems and equipment for electrical power, lighting, heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, service water heating and energy management apply to new high-rise residential buildings and new commercial buildings.

Falling Leaves May Cause Roof Headaches

It is important to have your gutters and downspouts checked and cleared of
falling debris before the winter weather sets in. Your roofing contractor
can clean your roof's gutters and check the downspouts as part of the roof
maintenance program. The ice and snow will be coming! The ice water will
need a clear path to melt freely so as not to freeze and build up onto the

Winterize Your Roof

To prevent roof collapse:
1. Remove snow from roof top
2. Make sure all drains are clear from snow, ice and debris
3. Evaluate your roof for tears, holes and cracks

Ice damming occurs when the snow melts and water drains below the snowbed and refreezes due to a warmer roof top.

Company warranties vs. Manufacturer warranties

Company warranties, or workmanship warranties, generally are applied to materials and labor. The warranty length is determined per job. You will need to ask your JR & Co. sales consultant what warranty can be applied to your needs.
Most manufacturer warranties leave the company who did the work to be obligated to do the repairs for the first 2 years of the warranty. After the 2 years, the manufacturer is responsible for repairs that need to be done. This is a great asset, because if for some reason a roofing company is no longer is existence, the roof is still covered by the manufacturer warranty. Each manufacturer and company is different. It’s important for you to ask each company about their company warranties and also read carefully through the manufacturer warranty.

Does Roof Terminology Get You Overwhelmed?
Often times when faced with purchasing a new commercial roof, the terminology you are faced with can be a lot like another language. Below, you will find definitions to commonly used roofing applications. If you don't see a term that you need information on, please let us know.

EPDM - (ethylene propylene dienemethylene terpolymer) This is a sulfur cure system. It is resistant to weathering and high temperatures. EPDM rubbers are used for outdoor applications. Durability features include: sunlight, ozone and oxidants. They are also resistent to water, steam and oxygenated solvents.

TPO - Are membranes that are flexible at low temperatures. The TPO polymer does not contain chlorine and no chlorine-containing ingredients are added during sheet production. TPO is an environmentally safe, “green” product.

PVC - Polyvinyl chloride. One of the most important features of this membrane is the heat welded application. Other features are: reflectivity, durable, resistant to puncture and flames.
